If you have a stock Y62 Patrol then chances are you are thinking about how you can improve your fuel economy, make some more power and get that awesome exhaust note.

We recently carried out a Stage 2 upgrade on a customer’s Y62 that achieved all three of these goals.

The standard exhaust system on the Patrol leaves a lot to be desired.  The factory exhaust manifolds resemble the ones old Henry Ford put on his flathead V8s back in the ‘30s and the Y-piece is very restrictive.

It is a bit fiddly to remove the factory manifolds but removing the front wheels and inner arch linings gives access and soon enough these agricultural looking pipes were on the ground, along with the rest of the factory exhaust system.

A set of Pacemaker headers was selected to provide dramatically improved flow from the round Nissan V8 exhaust ports.  These now flow through high-flow catalytic converters and feed into a full Pacemaker stainless steel 3-inch exhaust system with both centre and rear mufflers.

Once the exhaust was fitted, along with some extensions to the rear O₂ sensor harnesses, it was time to put the car on dyno and tune it to make the most of the freer-flowing exhaust and to improve fuel economy at the same time.

After the dyno tuning was completed, the 5.6-litre Nissan V8 produced 336.5hp at the rear wheels.  On the street this totally transformed the vehicle.  It launched with aggression and had strong acceleration during roll-ons at highway speeds.  The increase in throttle response was very noticeable.

For those who are looking for the very best in towing torque and ultimate power then look no further than our Harrop supercharger installation for the Y62.  The differences in both torque and power are substantial.  Torque is up everywhere – jumping over 37% to a peak of 475lbs/ft at 4000rpm.  Power skyrocketed to 430rwhp at 5500rpm.  The dyno graph below shows the difference between a tuned Y62 and one with the 2300 supercharger fitted.
